Where it sits
Low, just above the pubic area, curving towards the hips. A mini tummy tuck leaves a shorter one; an extended tummy tuck runs round past the hips; a fleur-de-lis adds a vertical scar up the middle. Bring the underwear or swimwear you usually wear to the consultation so the surgeon can plan the line.

How it heals
Red and firm at first, often raised for a few months, then flatter and paler over 12 to 18 months. Some people form thick (hypertrophic) or keloid scars; if you've scarred that way before, say so at the consultation.
What helps
- not smoking, before and after
- keeping the wound clean and dry until it has healed, as your surgeon advises
- no strain on the scar for the first weeks
- sun protection on the scar for the first year
- any silicone gel or tape your surgeon recommends, once the wound has closed
When to worry
A scar that keeps getting thicker, itchier or more raised after the first months: show your surgeon. Treatments exist.
Questions people ask
Will my tummy tuck scar show in a bikini?
The surgeon places it low so most underwear and many bikinis cover it. Bring yours to the consultation.
Can the scar be revised?
Sometimes, after it has fully matured. Ask your surgeon.
